About

The Richmond Community Garden came together to rebuild the vegetable garden next to Avebury house after the earthquake. Thanks to a wonderful group of volunteers, the garden quickly grew and we expanded to 3 acres of red-zone land. Our goal is to make this space a permanent and special part of the Richmond community.

We want to grow enough food to share, host gardening and food preservation workshops for everyone to join and learn, and create a natural playground where families can hang out and have fun, right next to the paddling pool and existing playground. We're proud to be pioneers in promoting food resilience, ecological restoration, and community engagement in the Red Zone.

Our mission is to create a safe community space for our volunteers, locals, and wider network to enjoy, learn, and connect. We also aim to produce enough food to donate to food banks and for our community to harvest themselves. And on our 3 acres of land, we have a mix of native plants, perennials, food crops, fruit trees, and beautiful ornamental plants.

This community garden offers
  • Shared harvest and planting.
  • Independent plots & allotments.
  • Educational resources.
  • School & learning programs.
  • Food pantry or pātaka
  • Workshops
  • Cooking classes
  • Food forests
